CHECK â Franklin County native Tom Maxey grew up on cornbread, but it took the end of his first career to turn him into a miller of heirloom and ancient grains, especially corn.
âMaize is a wonderful plant,â Maxey said. âItâs like a gift to us from the gods.â
And itâs been a gift to Maxey, giving him a second act after his first long career in sales for an Alabama-based metals company came to a sudden end. His service center was sold, and soon Maxey said it was clear he no longer shared the values of his employer.
The ITV star, who used to work as a journalist, is known for sharing hacks from both gardeners of the past and modern-day experts.
Recently, he revealed “old gardeners’ tricks” from “quite a few years ago”, including one that will shock many.
Titchmarsh claimed they could tell when it was safe to sow seeds outside by looking at the ground for weeds.
When weed seedlings began to emerge they “would regard the soil as being warm enough”.

S-Oil is seeking to diversify its energy mix by acquiring a 20-percent stake in a Korean-Saudi Arabian fuel cell company.
The refiner said Sunday that it signed an agreement with Fuel Cell Innovations (FCI) at a ceremony in Seoul on Friday.
FCI is a joint venture between Korea and Saudi Arabia and has more than 40 patents focusing on solid oxide fuel cell systems. FCI has forged partnerships with a number of fuel cell companies, including a joint development project with Italy s SOLIDpower which specializes in fuel cell systems for residential and commercial buildings, S-Oil said.
